The Ticklers’ sky-high ambitions were brought down to earth with a bump on Wednesday by rebranded, newly T-shirted reigning league leaders, the glove muppets, who ran the show with a 38-15 win. In an outrageous show of resources, organisation and smugness, the former charity cases were up and running at the season’s start with new kit, while the Ticklers still have no shirts to show for at least two years’ intense debate over whether purple (plum) goes with green and numerous design consultations. An omen perhaps – and so it proved. The Ticklers started the game in jaunty enough fashion, keeping on level terms with the muppets, geed up by their newly Americanised motivational team talk. But still not loud enough for Frank “I can’t hear you guys” Wood. Runs soon flowed – home runs from Frankie boy and Captain America. Commandante in chief Julie put in the performance of the season so far with a cunning smash and grab straight to third. And out in the field the team did their best to stem the tide of runs from those big-hitting muppets – Joanna (I had to give myself a mention sometime) and Jenny Big got their hands on vital balls (hmm?!) to stop them running into the mouths of snarling pitbulls and their unsavoury hoodie handlers, while Leigh got back into the swing of things with a catch at home. Becky as ever was a stalwart on first, David did a great job on third and Jenny Little was catcher par excellence. Mitch the pitch was on top form until temporarily disabled by a blow to the hand, when Mike stepped in to give him respite. Sadly the Ticklers couldn’t stop the downhill surge from then on. Overcome by the dazzle of white shirts flashing past the bases, if not the fading sunshine, all their good work started to unravel and try as they might, the Ticklers could not match the muppets’ performance, ending the game resigned to their loss but vowing to come back bigger and better. Never ones to let their spirits (geddit) be downcast, Julie ordered the customary shots all round and said “Don’t forget to mention my outstanding performance in the match report”, as Mike entered into a week of knife-edge negotiations with pub management on the chip front. Tune in next week for an update – sadly your trusty correspondent will be reporting from another front, so who will take up the mantle? Final Score: Ticklers 15 Glove Muppets 38 14/05/08 Primrose Hill pitch 4
